Op Borealis 07 - 2026/03/07

Situation

The majority of SLA combat elements have now withdrawn and consolidated around the city of Virojoki and the approaches to Nakar airfield, forming the last remaining organised resistance in Finland. Intelligence indicates these forces are operating with limited mobility after withdrawing equipment and supplies from southern positions, instead focusing on holding defensible terrain between the airfield and the urban area. Their defensive posture relies heavily on anti-air assets positioned around the airfield to restrict aerial freedom of manoeuvre; however, recent observations suggest many of the airfield’s fortified positions are not continuously manned, with personnel instead committed to patrols and strengthening defensive positions within the city. While the airfield remains defended, this over-reliance on mobile security and urban positions may present an opportunity to exploit gaps in coverage during a direct assault.

The time gained through delaying previous coalition advances has allowed SLA forces to reinforce defensive positions within the city itself. Enemy elements have focused on controlling key buildings, infrastructure, and major routes leading into Virojoki, establishing strongpoints designed to slow advancing forces and channel movement through predictable avenues of approach. The continued civilian presence in the city has further shaped these defensive positions, with the enemy exploiting the urban environment to complicate the use of heavy fires and large-scale manoeuvre.

Intelligence gathered from recent operations indicates the SLA have been actively attempting to exploit regional fibre distribution nodes linked to governmental and financial infrastructure. One of the two known nodes in the area has now been found abandoned. It is currently unclear whether the SLA achieved their intended objective before withdrawing, or if the position was vacated due to pressure from recent coalition advances and disruption by Finnish cyber security elements.

The remaining fibre node has shown confirmed activity within the last two hours and is assessed to still be of operational importance to SLA elements. Intercepted communications suggest the enemy has been attempting to access or reroute financial network traffic through these nodes to obtain account credentials and secure funds, likely to sustain operations or facilitate withdrawal. Securing the node and any associated equipment may provide valuable intelligence on the SLA’s broader objectives and the financial networks supporting their operations.

Acknowledgements

  • Refer to the situation report for detailed information on known factions and identification.
  • CIVPOP are friendly and should be cooperative with many of them fleeing to safety of nearby towns and police.
  • CIVPOP in small towns have likely retreated to larger towns and cities for safety. Engagements around this areas should take care to avoid civilian casualties.
  • SLA elements have demonstrated deliberate use of civilian shields around key assets. Civilian extraction and proportionate fires remain critical considerations for all elements moving forward to mitigate collateral damage and maintain operational legitimacy.

Commanders intent

The intent of this operation is to dismantle the final remaining SLA presence in Finland by targeting their last fortified positions within the city of Virojoki and the surrounding Nakar airfield. By applying coordinated pressure across both objectives, we aim to disrupt their defensive cohesion, neutralise remaining command and control infrastructure, and capture or destroy the remaining SLA elements operating in the region. Successful completion of this phase will remove the SLA’s final foothold in Finland and allow Finnish authorities to fully reassert control of the area.
